She was near. He had searched for her so long, season after season had gone by and he had never given up. He could smell her in the air, that soft scent of vanilla and jasmine. He looked down in the stream and saw something. He smiled and fished out a necklace. She was getting reckless.
Liya gritted her teeth. She spat on the ground and kicked a little stone. Yarek was close; she had even seen him last night. He had looked good too, handsome, muscled and, she wanted to kick herself for thinking those last things. She was no longer a silly maiden, hiding behind her mother’s skirts. She was a warrior, she had been on the run for 3 years, and now, and now it all seemed lost.
She had managed to elude him for a 2 more months, but then one morning she woke up by hearing his soft voice. She knew he had noticed the change in her breathing and a second later he straddled her. But she held a dagger to his throat.
“You haven’t lost your touch.” He smiled and her eyes darkened and pressed the dagger closer until he started to bleed.
“Get off!” He smiled, but nodded. Soon they stood facing each other, daggers in hand.
“Are you coming back?” He asked and tried to be calm, but his voice betrayed him.
“No,” she spat out and her hand closed around the dagger.
“Liya,” he whispered again and she melted. She had never been able to say no to him, and she was tired. Of running, of not having a home, of not being to see her family.
“One more time,” she said and kissed him. She longed to be with him.
1 month later
“May the Goddess bless your union.”
The people cheered and threw blossoms in the air. Liya did her best to smile as her mother hugged her close.
“I have missed you my child.”
“I missed you too mother,” she said and saw Yarek over her mother’s shoulder. She swallowed and tears burned behind her eyelids. She saw her sister join him and kiss him, she saw their children and she hid her face in her mother’s shoulder.
“He will be a good husband, we need this union.” Those were the words Yarek had given her as he took her back to the man she once had run from. And she had followed.
